Korean Perceptions of the United States: A History of Their Origins and Formation provides an in-depth examination into how Koreans past and present have formed their perceptions of the United States from a cultural-historical perspective and attempts to uncover and systematize the history of Koreans’ perceptions of America from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1990s. For the sake of convenience the four authors who collaborated on this book project have divided the 140-year history of Korean-American contact into four distinct periods: namely, the period before the signing of the Korean-American Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1882; the period following the conclusion of the treaty; the Japanese colonial period from 1905 to 1945; and the period from 1945 to the 1990s, when high-level Korean-American relations were restarted. In additional, introductory chapter has been included at the beginning of this book, presenting a summary classification and overview of Koreans' perceptions of America during these four periods.

본서는 과거 그리고 현재의 한국인들이 어떻게 대미인식을 형성했는지 문화-역사적인 관점으로부터의 깊이 있는 진단을 제공한다. 19세기 중반부터 1990년대에 이르기까지 한국인들의 대미인식의 역사를 드러내고 조직화하려 시도한다. 편의를 위하여 4명의 공저자들은 한-미 교류 140년의 역사를 4개의 구별되는 시기로 나누었다: 즉, 1882년 한-미 수호통상 협정 전; 협정의 결과에 따른 시기; 1905년에서 1945년에 이르는 일본 식민지 시기; 그리고 높은 수준의 한-미 관계가 다시 시작된 1945년에서 1990년대까지의 시기. 게다가 대략적인 분류와 이러한 네 시기 동안의 한국인의 대미인식에 대한 개관을 보여주는 서장이 이 책의 도입부에 포함되었다.
