[Series 1]
Korean Perceptions of the United States: A History of Their Origins and Formation provides an in-depth examination into how Koreans past and present have formed their perceptions of the United States from a cultural-historical perspective and attempts to uncover and systematize the history of Koreans¡¯ perceptions of America from the mid-nineteenth century until the 1990s. For the sake of convenience the four authors who collaborated on this book project have divided the 140-year history of Korean-American contact into four distinct periods: namely, the period before the signing of the Korean-American Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1882; the period following the conclusion of the treaty; the Japanese colonial period from 1905 to 1945; and the period from 1945 to the 1990s, when high-level Korean-American relations were restarted. In additional, introductory chapter has been included at the beginning of this book, presenting a summary classification and overview of Koreans' perceptions of America during these four periods.
