한국 샤머니즘은 오랜 역사에도 불구하고 이론적, 종교적 연구의 부족으로 문화의 전형, 정신적 사조, 한국 신앙의 체계와 문화를 잇는 종교적 문맥으로 간주되어 왔다. 종교적 순수성 즉 고유한 민간신앙임을 이유로 한국인들은 샤머니즘을 한국 전통문화를 해석하는 중요 요소로 인식했다. 현대 한국인들이 샤머니즘에 끌리는 첫 번째 이유는 샤머니즘이 조화로운 의식이라는 생각 때문이다. 한국의 샤먼 의식 즉 굿은 자연과 인간의 공동체 의식 건설과 사람들 간의 사회적 조화, 그리고 삶과 죽음 사이, 부모와 자식 간의 가족 화합을 개인적 화합 의식이자 한국의 고유정신인 한과 신명으로 나타내는 것을 목적으로 한다.
굿 의식에서 음악은 종교성과 오락성을 증대시키는 역할을 한다. 굿에서 나타나는 두 특성의 조화는 굿의 근엄한 의식성과 유쾌한 축제로써의 이중적 성격을 보여 준다. 종교와 음악이 조화를 이룬 의식화는 신성과 불경, 의식과 연극, 자연과 인간을 결합시키면서 효율성과 오락성을 제공한다.


Although Korean shamanism was marginalized for many centuries due to the lack of theoretical explanation or written religious doctrine, it has transmitted cultural norms, the spiritual ethos, and the religious context of the Korean belief system and culture. Due to its religious purity as the “indigenous” religion of the people, Koreans have realized that shamanism is the principal key to interpreting Korea’s traditional culture.
The primary factor that attracts most contemporary Koreans to shamanism is the notion of a ritualization of harmony. Korean shaman ritual, or gut, aims to construct a collective harmony between human and nature, a social harmony between the human beings, a family harmony between the living and the dead and between the parents and the offspring, as well as an individual harmony capable of manifesting the Korean ethos of han and sinmyeong.
Music functions to enhance both religiosity and entertainment in Korean gut. The harmony of these two traits during a gut illuminates its dual nature as a solemn ritual and as a merry festival. This ritualization of religious-musical harmonization, providing efficacy and entertainment while combining the sacred and the profane, ritual and theater, and nature and human, is unique in Korean shaman ritual music.
