In “Hong Gildong,” Seo draws loosely from an early Korean literary source, Tale of Hong Gildong, attributed to Heo Gyun(1569-1618), to tell the story of a forty-five-year-old man wading through depression and a midlife crisis. Dr. Kang, his psychiatrist, recommends the man to stop seeing a woman behind his wife’s back and listens to one of the man’s disturbing childhood memories. The man seeks release from his existence and wishes that a straw man (an element from the earlier work) would come to take his place.
“The Woodcutter and the Nymph” is a modern retelling of the well-known Korean folktale “Namukkun-gwa seonnyeo.” In the folktale, a nymph’s wing-clothes are taken away to prevent her from returning to her heavenly home. Seo’s story features a young woman who cannot return to her childhood home and finds herself trapped in a conventional life of marriage and childbirth. The alienation of the young woman is portrayed in a broken chronology of short incidents and flashbacks to depict a life whose reality has faded. Through this story that has the surreal quality of a dream, Seo comments on the vagueness of purpose in a life that only holds the usual expectations.

서하진의 “홍길동”은 초기 국문학 소설인 허균(1569-1618)의 “홍길동”에서 모티프를 얻어 우울증을 겪으면서 중년의 위기를 힘겹게 살아가는 45세의 남자 이야기를 자유롭게 그려 나가고 있다. 남자의 정신병 의사인 닥터 강은 그에게 자기 아내의 등 뒤에서 다른 여자를 찾는 것을 그만두고, 그의 혼란스런 어린 시절의 기억에 귀를 기울이라고 충고한다. 그는 자신의 실존으로부터 벗어나기를 원하고 지푸라기 인형이 그의 자리를 대신해 주기를 바란다.

“나무꾼과 선녀”는 잘 알려진 한국 설화 “나무꾼과 선녀”를 현대적으로 재구성한 작품이다. 설화에서 나무꾼은 선녀가 천국의 자기 집으로 돌아가는 것을 막으려고 그녀의 날개옷을 숨긴다. 서하진의 소설은 어린 시절의 집으로 돌아갈 수 없는 한 젊은 여성을 그리고 있다. 그녀는 결혼이라는 틀에 박힌 삶과 출산의 덫에 빠지게 되었음을 깨닫게 된다. 연대와 상관없이 배열된 단편적인 사건들과 회상에 따라 젊은 여성의 단절감이 묘사되고 있어 리얼리티가 사라진 삶이 생생하게 그려지고 있다. 서하진은 초현실적인 꿈과 같은 이 이야기를 통해서 오직 일상적인 기대만을 지탱하고 있는 삶의 목적에 있어서의 모호성을 보여주고 있다.
