[Short Fiction Series 16]

¡°House of Idols,¡±¡¡regarded as one of Choi In-hoon's major works, is set in post-war Seoul. The narrator reveres two characters, one an established figure in Korea's literary world and the other an enigmatic youth mysteriously related to the literary luminary. The narrator's changing perception of the true nature of the young man and his relationship with the older man illustrates the author's view of Korean society's difficulty in recognizing and establishing sound values.
¡°End of the Road¡± is a brief but powerful perspective on the influence of the encroaching outside world on personal lives and a broader metaphor of the effects of industrialization on the society. A young prostitute plying her wares around a U.S. military base is returning home but we begin to wonder whether the home she left is still there.
