This book is based on mindam. Since the term ‘mindam’ means a collection of tales passed down orally, the tales contained in this book can be called folktales in a broad sense. In the process of writing this book, I have intended that it serve as a guide for those who want to study the theory of Korean folktales, and so a detailed introduction is included to provide readers with some background about the types, the concepts and the characters of Korean folktales. In addition, the bibliography includes research about Korean folktales written in western languages, to help those who want to study them.

민담이란 채집된 구비전승 설화를 말하므로 이 책에 수록된 이야기들은 넓은 의미에서 민간설화(folktale)라고 할 수 있다. 저자는 한국 민간설화이론 연구자들을 독자로 염두에 두었으므로 도입부에 한국설화의 유형, 개념, 특징 등 자세한 배경지식을 담았다. 또한 참고문헌에는 관심 있는 연구자들을 위해 서구 언어들로 씌어진 한국설화에 대한 연구자료 목록도 수록했다.
