This book is based on mindam. Since the term ¡®mindam¡¯ means a collection of tales passed down orally, the tales contained in this book can be called folktales in a broad sense. In the process of writing this book, I have intended that it serve as a guide for those who want to study the theory of Korean folktales, and so a detailed introduction is included to provide readers with some background about the types, the concepts and the characters of Korean folktales. In addition, the bibliography includes research about Korean folktales written in western languages, to help those who want to study them.
