What brought the Korean middle class to play an important role in the transitional phase of democratization? What influenced them to change its conservative values and preoccupation with economic stability and to actively participate in the political process? What are the backgrounds of their participation? This book is designed to trace and answer these questions. Members of the Korean middle class were the core actors in terms of size and their strategic positions in important social organizations and institutions. This study examines the factors explaining middle class participation in the movement for democratization. It develops a complex argument to explain the participation of different sectors of the middle class in the democracy movement in the mid-1980s incorporating both structural and cultural explanations. Especially concerned was the author with the influence of Confucianism and Christianity and the development of post-materialist values on the political culture of Korea, and how the interaction of different but not necessarily conflicting sets of values has influenced different sectors of the middle class to take action against the authoritarian government and in support of democracy. Finally, this study will perhaps provide support for the positions of both modernization theorists and cultural theorists for democratic transition and consolidation.

한국의 중산층이 한국의 민주화 과정에 있어서 중요한 역할을 하게 된 이유는 무엇인가? 한국의 중산층이 기존의 보수적 가치와 경제 안정 제일주의에서 벗어나 정치적 과정에 적극적으로 참여하게 된 동기는 무엇인가? 중산층 참여의 배경은 무엇인가? 이 책은 지금까지의 한국 중산층 행동의 경험과 그 배경에 대한 연대기적 고찰을 바탕으로 이러한 질문들에 대한 답변을 제시한다. 1980년대 중반 서로 다른 섹터의 중산층들의 민주화 운동 참여와 그 요인을 설명하기 위해 구조주의적 접근법과 문화적 접근법을 포용하는 포괄적인 접근법을 원용한다. 특히 유교 및 기독교, 포스트 물질주의적 가치 발전이 한국 정치문화에 미치는 영향과 상호 이질적이고 상충적인 이런 가치들이 각 섹터별 중산층에 어떠한 영향을 미쳐서 1987년 권위주의 정권에 대항하고 민주주의를 옹호하는 행동을 취하게 되었는지의 문제에 대해서 관심을 두고 분석한다. 이런 관점에서 작가는 민주화와 민주화의 공고화에 대한 근대화 이론과 문화 이론가들의 입장을 지지한다.
