한국의 역사는 중국사와 일본사 안에서 각기 다르게 기술되어 있다. 그러나 과연 하나의 역사가 서로 다르게 기술될 수 있는 것인가? 역사가 누구에 의해 소유될 수 있는 것인가?
동아시아의 역사는 굳이 학문적 논쟁이 아니더라도 역사전쟁이라 불리는 전쟁에 휘말려 있으며, 특히 한국은 일본의 역사 교과서 왜곡과 중국이 자국 고대사 속에 한국역사를 편입시키는 등의 문제점들로 인해 그 역사전쟁의 가장 중심에 자리잡고 있다.
본서는 기존의 한국사 기술의 주류에서 벗어나 있다. 예를 들어 삼국시대 이전 국가역사의 기술은 일부학계에서는 인정하고 있지 않는 부분이다.
이 책은 역사를 바라보고 연구하는 여러 집단들의 다양한 견해들을 모아 전체적으로 조망하여 한국 고대국가 역사의 영역을 더욱 확장하고 한국 중세사와 근현대사 역시 우리가 주체가 되어 온 역사를 기술하고 있다. 역사학의 정체성 자체가 혼란한 지금, 이 책은 우리의 주체적인 국가 확립과 역사발전을 우리에게 일깨워 준다.
