The Korean problem after the World War II was either directly connected with Great Power interests or affected by the outcome of Great Power politics. This book seeks to analyse Britain’s foreign policy towards the Korean unification from the end of the World War II to the end of the Geneva Conference in 1954. By examining in detail the policies of Great Britain and the position of South Korea on unification of the country, this study may help to contribute to mutual understanding between the peoples of Korea and the United Kingdom. The Korean portion of the Geneva Conference has not drawn much attention from the academic world, overshadowed as it was by the immensity of the Indochina question. It is necessary to explore more fully why the Geneva Conference on Korea was originally convened and why it failed to reach any agreement on Korean unification. The British leaders did not intend to formulate an effective policy for Korean unification, but to use the Korean problem as an event which could contribute toward the easing of international tension and as an occasion to get people around the table.

제2차 세계대전 후 한국 문제는 외세의 관심과 관련이 있거나 외세의 정치력에 영향을 받아 왔다. 이 책은 세계대전 종식 후 1954년에 체결된 제네바 협정에 따른 한국통일에 대한 영국의 외교정책을 다루었다. 영국 외교정책의 세부사항과 한국 통일에 대한 남한의 지위를 고찰함으로써 한국과 영국 간의 상호이해에 기여할 것이다.
인도차이나 문제에 가려 한국 통일문제는 제네바 협정 체결 과정에서 세계의 주목을 받지 못했다. 한국이 제네바 협상에서 관심을 끌지 못한 이유와 왜 한국 통일에 대해 어떠한 합의도 이끌어 내지 못했는가에 대해 좀더 심도 있는 논의가 필요하다. 영국 정치 지도자들은 한국 통일문제에 대한 효과적인 정책을 제시하지 않고 단지 한국을 국제적 긴장을 완화시키고 협상을 유지시키기 위한 정치적 이벤트로 이용하였다.
