Through translation and analysis by Lee Younghee, author of Ideology, Culture, and Han: Traditional and Early Modern Korean Women’s Literature, we gain a new appreciation of women’s literature of the Joseon and early modern periods. Lee Younghee suggests that the central unifying theme of Korean women’s literature in these two pivotal historical periods is han, or unresolved resentment. Women who lived during the Joseon period suffered in an oppressive social environment strictly governed by rigidly patriarchal Neo-Confucian precepts, which led to feelings of han. Following Joseon’s collapse. Korean society experienced rapid and profound change, and yet the legacy of centuries of institutionalized patriarchism has endured, thus perpetuating women’s han in a greatly altered and more complex world. While providing us with a rich array of translations of poems, songs, and Kim Myeongsun’s early modern short story “The Suspicious Girl”, Lee Younghee reminds us of the central importance of social context in the creation and understanding of Korean women’s literature.

본서에 담긴 저자 이영희의 번역과 분석을 통해 우리는 조선시대와 근대 초기의 여성문학에 대한 새로운 인식을 얻는다. 저자는 이 두 주요 역사시기의 한국 여성문학을 관류하는 중심적인 통일적 주제가 ‘한’이라고 말한다. 조선시대 여성들은 엄격한 가부장적 유교 계율이 지배하는 억압적 사회환경에서 한의 정서를 체험했다. 조선시대가 끝나자 한국사회는 급격한 변화를 겪지만 수세기 동안 제도화된 가부장제의 유산은 살아남아서 크게 바뀌고 복잡해진 세상에서도 여성의 한은 영속화하게 된다. 다양한 시와 노래 그리고 김명순의 근대 초기 단편소설 󰡔의심의 소녀󰡕를 번역 수록하는 한편으로 저자는 한국 여성문학의 창작과 이해에 있어 사회적 맥락이 얼마나 중요한지를 일깨워 준다.
