Life is a series of encounters. Those encounters can change a person’s destiny, and also at times decide a nation’s rise and decline. I have met and battled against innumerable personages who influenced the world before vanishing into the abyss of history. As a result, I brought home some trophies like the ROK-Japan Normalization Treaty, good financial benefits from the dispatch of troops to Vietnam, Korea’s highly lucrative commercial ventures in the Middle East, and the successful launch of ASPAC.
In the twenty-first century, we must never allow history repeat itself. We must make sure that we forget the sorrows of our tainted past and strive to join the ranks of world leaders. I want to show the world that we Koreans are capable of making a genuine contribution to global development and peace. We have proved that where there is a will, there is a way. That is why I have ventured into publishing my memoirs in English.

삶은 우연의 연속이다. 우연은 한 개인의 운명을 바꾸기도 하고 시대는 한 나라의 흥망성쇠를 만들어낸다. 나는 막강한 영향력을 가진 수많은 유명인사들을 만났고, 그들과 싸워 왔다. 그 결과 나는 이 나라 국민들에게 몇 가지 성과를 가져다주었다. 한일정상회담을 성사시켰고, 베트남 파병을 통해 재정적 안정을 가져왔으며 중동지역으로부터 국익에 도움이 되는 사업들을 수주하였고 ASPAC을 성공적으로 출범시켰다.
21세기를 맞아 우리는 우리의 역사가 되풀이되게 해서는 안 된다. 오욕의 과거를 잊고, 세계의 지도자들과 어깨를 나란히 할 수 있게 되기를 바란다. 나는 우리 한국인이 세계의 발전과 평화에 진정으로 기여할 수 있음을 보여주고 싶다. 또한 “뜻이 있는 곳에 길이 있다.”는 사실을 증명하고자 나의 회고록을 영어로 출간하였다.
