When translating unique cultural terminology of Korea, even the most confident in the English language is apt to feel difficulties. It is probably natural for those who never had particular interest to know nothing about how terminology of our traditional culture such as ¡°Hunmin jeong-eum¡± (The Korean script), ¡°Samguk sagi¡± (The Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms), and ¡°Joseon wangjo sillok¡± (The Official Records of Joseon Dynasty), have been translated. It is also natural for them to be unaware of the official English title of modern Korean government organizations and offices such as ¡°The Blue House¡±, ¡°Ministry of Culture and Tourism¡± and ¡°Korea Research Foundation¡±. That is because such terms are seldom included in most of Korean-English dictionaries.
For each terminology this glossary provides headings in Korean, Chinese characters and Roman characters, the period of the term, its category, English translation, and other additional information. It utilizes both the ¸ÆŦ-¶óÀÌ»þ¿öÇ¥±â¹ý and the new Roman Character Transcription Principles of the Korean Language announced in July 2000. This glossary will prove to be especially useful when translating official titles of both government and private organizations, and when scholars and students are writing or translating into English various papers related to Korean traditional culture. In addition, it can contribute to unifying terms that have been translated into various different forms and will also be a useful reference book for foreign students studying and majoring in Korean studies.
